Kerry Lawson is the mother of a son with Trisomy 21. In this article she clearly and passionately explains why she rejects the term 'Down Syndrome' and the many ways that the term 'Down' and its variations are being used. Lawson argues that the words we use do matter as they reflect attitudes and send a powerful message to the reader/listener. Furthermore she argues that if our language, attitudes and information reinforce negative stereotypes and mythology, then that will be reflected in how society responds to individuals with disabilities.
