Facing the Crowd. Managing other people's insensitivities to your disabled child.

Book

The book is written primarily for parents of children with a disability. Other people - relatives, friends, teachers, neighbours, members of the community, may knowingly or unknowingly express insensitive attitudes about their child. The book aims to help parents understand why it is sometimes reasonable to feel uncomfortable with others; why it may be reasonable for others to feel uncomfortable with them; how parents might respond to situations in a way that is more positive and comfortable for both parties. The authors offer practical and realistic strategies which were formulated through a series of workshops with families of children with disability. The situations and arguments are presented clearly with practical advice and with humour. The book is illustrated with line drawings. Keywords: Advocacy, Attitudes, Families.
