Being self-determined involves having control over choices and decisions impacting on one's life. Based on an American national survey, this article captures the importance of self-determination for all people including people with intellectual disability. Individual perceptions of independence, integration and productivity were identified as reflective of the self-determination of people with intellectual disability. The method and procedures of the survey conducted are outlined and an analysis of the results triggers a discussion about realistic trends as to the extent of how self-determined people with intellectual disability appeared to be.
