Teachers in Australia use the terms 'integration' and 'inclusion' loosely. This article seeks to clarify the differences between the terms 'integration' and 'inclusion'. 'Inclusion' is just that - the student with the disability is not only present but participates in every activity in a regular class in their local school community. Integration, on the other hand, does not show this level of commitment - the student is an outsider who is expected to fit into the regular school. The author argues that curriculum and instructional techniques should be developed at the local school level (rather than using heavily centralised models).
