The authors argue that many service providers are creating additional barriers to the social integration (inclusion) of people with intellectual disabilities through inappropriate age stereotyping and discrimination. They stress that, when working towards the 'five accomplishments' based on normalisation principles, service providers should keep in mind the fact that aging in itself often brings about discriminatory practice. This works against people with intellectual disabilities in particular. They also stress the importance of offering older people with intellectual disabilities opportunities to be included in the life of their community rather than merely physically living in the community.
