This article is the outcome of research into a community programme established in 1985. The programme recruits volunteers and matches them on a one-to-one basis with people with varying degrees of intellectual disability. The study involved written feedback from 25 trained volunteers who had been a companion to someone with intellectual disability for more than one year. Keywords: Friendship, Social Activities
