This article examines four cornerstones of American social philosophy. The four cornerstones are economic productivity, personal choice, equity and independence. Harry sees these cornerstones as alien to many families as all people do not operate the same value systems. This raises the question of how to respect other people even though our own values and judgments aren't going to change. Harry elaborates on her answer to this question.
