A sense of belonging: Integration in recreation and leisure-time activities

Written Material

The major barriers to participation of people in community activities is not funding, but attitudinal barriers. These barriers mean that funding becomes a problem because people are not prepared to think creatively and flexibly. Within an inclusive system that values such creativity and flexibility, people's roles become different, but in a sense freer: they are 'facilitators' and 'supporters' rather than 'providers of service or care'. Also provided are stories of 4 young people in which the above arguments can be seen in terms of their recreational lives. What can also be seen in these stories is that it is relationships that make leisure meaningful for people. Keyword: Social activities
