Supported employment in the US has clearly established itself as the most effective employment alternative for individuals with disabilities. In this paper, four major challenges in the implementation of supported employment are identified: conversion of day programs to integrated employment; increase of program capacity; expanding consumer choice and self determination and promoting meaningful employment outcomes. The authors offer solutions to these challenges and conclude that if supported employment is to continue to grow, consumers, family members, advocates and professionals must renew their efforts at advocacy.
