The author places disability in an Aboriginal context. An understanding of the special situation of being Aboriginal have to be acknowledged before looking at disability. These issues are the fight for survival, coping with personal trauma in oneself and one's family, poverty and having a poor standard of living and the attendant health problems. For this reason Bostock asserts that, within the Aboriginal community disability is not necessarily seen as a separate issue and Aboriginal people with disabilities are not seen as a separate category of people.
