This case study describes 30 months in the life of Emma, a young woman with a history of severe problem behaviours, who moved from a large public institution into the community. While still experiencing times of major regression, her general behaviour and improved. In addition, her improved lifestyle led to other positive changes. Staffing issues were shown to have a significant impact on Emma's behaviour and the development of possible behavioural support strategies. The study confirms the importance of developing multi-component, individual plans of support and the need for designing service environments that promote enduring lifestyle change.
