Michael Peterson outlines support initatives that have been successful in assisting people with disabilities to participate in their community. An important strategy is the 'circle of support': friends, family and community members gather together around a person with disability to plan and support them to attain a more community-centred lifestyle in areas such as accommodation, relationships, inclusive schooling and employment. Efforts such as these have resulted in new styles of human service that are truly person- and family-centred. The author concludes that inclusion and support of people with disabilities as valued members of their communities is enriching communities, and these strategies have potential for wider use.
