This article shows what can be achieved when support services meet changing individual needs. Working on the principle that children have the right to and are best placed in a family and community environment, Zavier Hospital (Qld) moved from being a residential for children to a support network. This took a period of almost four years. Today most the children are either living permanently with their family with full support from community based services or have been placed in alternate families who share their care with the natural family.
