This informative paper describes how an accommodation service in the Sydney area assists individuals with disabilities and differing support needs to make and foster friendships with people who do not have a disability. It outlines factors that inhibit the development of relationships and ways of overcoming this using the Networking model. The paper includes examples of individuals who have been supported to pursue their interests in community settings, leading to 'astounding' improvement in behaviour, social skills and communication as well as self esteem.
