This article is reprinted from The Age newspaper in Melbourne. It is the story of a woman with an intellectual disability who was remanded in custody (ie. prison) for at least three months after being charged with assault, but without actually being convicted of this or nay other crime. The reason for being in jail was because the Community Services Dept. could not promise adequate care if she was released on bail. The article points to a failure by the Dept. to listen to the parents about what their daughter did and did not need and continued failures to provide adequate support, which eventually led the woman to become entangled in the criminal justice system.
