This article is actually an overview of a special issue of Family Relations (see File No. 10562) but it also provides a number of important aspects about family diversity that are important for researchers and professionals dealing with families. Such aspects include; knowledge that among diverse types of families similarities might also be found, that individual families within a type (eg lesbian families) are also heterogeneous, that it is necessary for researchers to also gain an understanding of family members' perceptions of their own experiences, and much more.
