This paper discusses the relationship between parents and professionals in relation to making decisions about their children. Traditionally, parents have been treated as the 'junior partner' in the relationship, being manipulated by a system that offers them false empowerment. The authors suggest a 'partnership of concord' (from the heart), in which parents are recognised as the 'experts' on their children and the system supports them to meet their child's needs. Attitudes and strategies for professionals to employ in partnerships are discussed.
