This book documents the life histories of nine adults who have lived independently in the community for 30 years or more. The editors and other anthropologists who contributed to the book based their study on unobtrusive observation, conversation and frequent personal contact with the nine people. From their observations detailed portraits emerge of each person's background, family history, years in an institution and present day life. One of the editors warns, however, that the book should not be thought of as a set of finished portraits, but as a report of older persons whose lives are in progress. Keyword: Aging
