Medical consent and intellectual handicap- who decides?

Written Material

This paper looks at issues of contraception and sterilisation which raise the sensitive issue of sexual freedom and expression, the right to procreate and the right to self determination for people with disabilities. It describes historical aspects of legal interventions which have occurred for people with disabilities and how the law intervenes in today's society. The paper explains legal factors involved in valid consent and provides a baseline which lists options open to ordinary people who are concerned about their child rearing future. It concludes with the option of imposing guardianship. Keyword: Legal
