Pain in the assessment

Article
Download

What is the real purpose of doing an assessment? Is it to compare how a person is to the norm? If so, where will that lead to? What can be done with information identifying a person's weaknesses? Can you build goals on what a person cannot do? What is this doing for my child?

These are the questions I began to ask myself as my husband and I sat in a three-hour session with twelve professionals telling us what our child cannot do. This article explores the assessment process of a person with disability and looks at how an assessment should be painful but have purpose and not a negative impact for a person with disability.
