(Presentation to Community Summit on Disability Advocacy and Information Services)

Written Material

In this address, the Hon. Justice Marcus Einfeld stresses the value and importance of independent advocacy, saying that where there is no provision for independent social advocacy (or when it is discouraged), then those who are most vulnerable suffer the most. He asserts that the government should recognise that central control of public advocacy would have the effect of depriving both the government and the people of quality independent input. He also offers advice to those wanting to influence the government, arguing that we need to work at achieving attitudinal change, not only on the part of the government, but of the public. (The community summit was organised by the Council of Social Services of NSW.) Keywords: Advocacy, Government
