Promoting social value

Written Material

Darcy Elks, a parent and a leader around social role valorisation theory, conducted workshops for families around Australia in 1994. She divided the theory into seven different areas, explaining their relevance to family members and friends/advocates of people with disabilities, how important each area is, and also how we need to think about and act upon new strategies for changes in the lives of people with disabilities. The author used parents' comments about each of these seven areas in an attempt to show how important and also how new they are for many parents and family members; for example "Having a child in a group of disabled children isn't how it has to be" or "My daughter needs to spend more time with peers who can show her how to behave and be like them...".
