There are two main points in this article. Bynum (a community education officer) argues that people with intellectual disabilities are the best community educators for changing other peoples values and expectations. This leads to Bynum's second point: in order for people with intellectual disabilities to do this, they need to be in their local communities experiencing what life is really like and taking risks. As the author argues, growth is dependent upon risks. The way we are able to discover things in our life that we can and cannot do, is because we are allowed to take risks. This has to be a right for everybody, and the only way other people in the community will expand their expectations and values about people with intellectual disability is if they are able to exercise this risk taking right.
