Reconstructing the Self: Photography, Education and Disability

Written Material

Photography, like language, provides a powerful means of defining individuals and social groups. This paper examines the potential of photographic work as a means of exploring and reconstructing understandings of disability in an educational context. It is argued that photographic work produced by students with physical and sensory disabilities during a ten week project has enabled them to understand how their identities are constructed, and begin to reconstruct new understandings of themselves. Keywords: Education, School age
