This is an easy to read short article of benefit to any friend, relative, advocate or caregiver of a person with a disability. Using a relationship the author had with another woman, she illustrates a model which defines 4 levels of intervention for handling sexual and relationship issues and problems. The model provides a framework for understanding the degree of help a person is contributing. What is stressed at each level is respect for the person's autonomy and decision making ability. The role that the friend, relative etc. should take is that of helping people work out for themselves what is best for themselves. Such a supportive role is a vital component of a total approach that enables people with disabilities to take charge of their own lives. Keyword: Self Determination
