This paper, presented at the 1990 ASSID Conference, considers issues in relation to sexual abuse of adults and children with intellectual disabilities. It considers risk factors, prevention, protection, and intervention. The author aims to raise the consciousness of professionals and families that people with disabilities may be more at risk since perpetrators typically seek out people in vulnerable situations. Sexual abuse is most commonly committed by a person in a position of trust in relation to the victim, and the author advocates opportunities for both adults and children to learn protective behaviours. She discusses how service providers, carers and advocates can provide support to people. Keyword: Families
