Special at school but lonley at home: An alternative friendship group for adolescents with Down Syndrome

Written Material

In order for people with disability to live independent and full lives in the community, relationships are important. However, one of the most intractable problems for people with disability is making friends. This paper documents a study which compares the strength of school based friendship groups to mixed aged community based groups, and why families and professionals should look beyond same age peer friendships. Specific methods to establish successful Circles of Friends* are also discussed.,,*It should be notes that several terms are used interchangeably to describe Circles of Friends. These include Networks of Support and Circles of Support.
