This article draws on Erick Leipold's keynote address to Disabled Peoples International (DPI) National Assembly. Leipoldt spoke about the need for parents to allow their child with a disability to be given opportunities to grow and develop as individuals rather than be held back and over-protected. He believes people with disability themselves (and DPI as an organisation) have a role to play in supporting and educating parents to embrace the Disability Services Act and its principles and objectives. He suggested that organisations need to look at alternative ways of providing support to people with disability. Keyword: Families, Attitudes
