Triple Screening during Pregnancy - facts, comments and opinion

Written Material

Pre-natal screening for Down Syndrome is becoming more widely used. This article reports the findings of a three year study which was published in the British Medical Journal. In addition it canvasses (partly through extracts from correspondence) ethical and moral issues surrounding pre-natal screening. It is clear that assumptions are being made by medical staff as to the worth of the unborn child. Instead of providing informed knowledge and counselling, there is increasing pressure to automatically abort foetuses testing positive. The article points out the dangers of moving in this direction.
