This study tests the theory that attitudes towards people with disabilities can be divided into two types: attitudes at a societal level and attitudes at a personal level. The implications suggest that it would be fruitful to improve attitudes at a societal level through media campaigns. Fostering acceptance at a personal level should be through personal contact. An outcome of the study showed that positive prejudice - evaluating a person with a disability more highly than a non disabled person - can, in its extreme form, lead to dauntingly high expectations which cause 'failure' which in turn engenders negative attitudes.
